Grown with Love

*Photo removed

I just had to share a picture of Chipmunk with the first vegetables out of his garden this year. A pretty good squash and zucchini. Can you tell how proud he is? All of their hard work is starting to pay off and I'm afraid that soon we'll have more squash than we know what to do with. Anyone got any good recipes for squash???
Not only is this garden saving us money and giving us lots of great-tasting fruits and vegetables; I find it amazing what kids will eat when they grow it themselves!
I hope everyone has a wonderful 4th of July! We'll be enjoying the day by going swimming, grilling out with family, and watching the fireworks display our small town puts on each year.

P.S. Thank you for all of the nice comments on Monkey's train cake. I did make it myself and it was pretty easy, honestly. Growing up my mom always made us special birthday cakes each year and I've vowed to try to carry on this tradition. I can't cook at all but I do love to bake.

Okay your kids are seriously the cutest .... and another stylish tshirt. Good job Mom! :) Is he missing his baby teeth? That is very cool that they're eating their homegrown veggies. Enjoy your 4th of July! :)

So cute!

Grilled or steamed squash with a little parmesan and pepper is one of my favs. My sister makes a squash casserole with cheese and...crackers...

I like em fried...I know it's not as healthy, but the taste is awesome!
BTW - I don't think I commented before on the train cake, but I am truly impressed. I keep telling myself that if I can ever be a stay-at-home mom (that's my goal about a year after this last adoption), that I'm going to do more things like that for the kids. We'll see how it works out! ;)

Dave made a great Squash soup. I don't care for squash and I even liked it. It is very thick but you could probably thin it some.

Here's the recipe
6 T chopped onion; 4 T margarine; 6 cups peeled and cubes butternut squash; 3 cups water; 4 cubes chicken bouillon; 1/2 t dried majoram; 1/4 t ground black pepper; 1/8 t ground cayenne pepper; 16 oz cream cheese.

Saute onions in margarine until tener.
Add everything except cream cheese. Bring to boil; cook 20 minutes or until squash is tender.
Puree sqush and cream cheese in a blender or food processor in batches until smooth. Return to saucepan, and heat through. Do not allow to boil.

Or I could have just given you the link... http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Butternut-Squash-Soup/Detail.aspx

Love squash! Isn't it great how kids love growing things? And to be honest, I don't think they ever grow out of that joy - the satisfaction of seeing their work. Your boys are SO cute and I'm still really impressed by the train cake. What a great tradition!

That picture is so cute! Next year, we'll live somewhere that we'll be able to have a garden, I can't wait.

Wow! What beautiful veggies! I miss the garden we had when we lived up north. Florida just doesn't grow veggies well like we had in NY!

Hi Allison. Thanks for posting on my blog. Your two boys are adorable. You are going back for a girl, how exciting. I always wanted a girl (just didn't want to wait), but I am getting used to the idea of having a little boy. My DH is excited because he will have a "little buddy."
